Originates from the work Aphorism of the ancient Greek physician and philosopher Hippocrates. It is translated as: “Life is short; (the) art is long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult. The physician must not only be prepared to do what is right himself, but also to make the patient, the attendants, and externals cooperate”. Life is short, but it takes a long time and hypes of challenges to master the art.

Often used as: “Life is short, (the) art is long”, or just, “Life is short”. (with help of wikipedia) Though some say it means: “art lasts forever, but artists die and are forgotten”.

While both explanations make absolute sense, the first inspires me the most. So whether Hippocrates did mean to say this or not, for me “Ars longa, vita brevis” means “Life is short, (the) art is long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult”. I think this in not only true in medicine, but applies to life itself too. Life is short, full of beautiful opportunities and challenging situations.

Hippocrates, and most other philosophers, are like hero’s to me. Not because everything they say/said is true, it is because they are/were thinking. They observe everything around them; they actively think about “life” and try to solve the bigger questions. They don’t take the world and everything on and around it for granted, they want to know.

Considering the above, it once more occurs to me to enjoy or at least appreciate every single day. To make the best of the years I can spend on this marvelous planet. My biggest wish is that when I die, no matter at what age, I am satisfied and happy with what I did with my live and never stoped asking.
